Sally Dawson

Candidate for Chair-Elect, Nominating Committee

Biographical Summary
Sally Dawson works in the area of theoretical high energy physics.  She received her B.S. in Physics and Mathematics at Duke University in 1977 and her Ph.D. in Physics in 1981 at Harvard University.  From 1981-1983, she was a postdoctoral fellow at Fermilab and from 1983-1986 she was a postdoctoral fellow at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  In 1986, she went to Brookhaven National Laboratory where she is now a senior scientist. 

Dawson's research interests are in the phenomenological study of elementary particles at colliders.  She is particularly interested in the study of electroweak symmetry breaking at both the Tevatron collider and the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. 

Dawson has served on many advisory panels and committees, including the 2005 National Research Council study of Elementary Particle Physics.  She was Chair of the Division of Particle and Fields in 2004.  She is a fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Candidate's Statement
The APS represents the physics community in many different ways:  It speaks with authority on scientific questions, it brings the physics community together for symposia and conferences, it publishes scientific journals, it lobbies for funding for basic research, and it communicates the excitement of physics to students and the general public. 

In order to achieve these goals, the APS needs to attract a diverse and dedicated leadership.  If asked to serve on the nominating committee, I will work to find candidates who can address the challenges of leading the APS.
